From Colonial Williamsburg to Fashion Week

Lace

A new colleague here at VCU Libraries, Sue Robinson our Director of Communication and Public Relations, made me aware of the Textile and Costume Collection in the Dewitt Wallace Decorative Arts Center at Colonial Williamsburg. While I have yet to go for a visit, it was interesting to learn a little more about it through some posts that Sue wrote to coincide with Fashion Week in New York this past September. She drew some interesting comparisons between current and colonial fashion trends:

Today’s Cape is Yesterday’s Cloak

Attention to Detail: Embellishments with Lace

The Apron: It’s Not Just for Work Anymore

Getting Carried Away: A Stash for Stuff

And for an overview of what the Dewitt Wallace Collection includes, check out What People Wore: Discover, Explore and Share and in particular the Historic Threads online exhibit.
