Query: Influence of India’s fashion on 1970’s American clothing

I have been trying to help a student find some peer review articles on the topic of the influence of India (not native Americans) on fashions of the 1970’s.  We have a discovery layer in EBSCO, and I’ve been searching with this student for quite a while and finding nothing.  This seems incredible to me… we can find a few things in Berg and GVRL, but the assignment requires 3 peer review articles. The influences seem so obvious, I keep thinking I must be missing things, or EBSCO is wonky today.  Any help would be appreciated.

  1. Also, the V&B book, British Asian Style: Fashions & Textiles/Past & Present, provides a brief overview of this history in the chapter, Hippies Bohemians & Chintz by Sonia Ashmore. It is not as in depth as one might like, but it is a nice introduction.

  2. I just posted an article on a cool wool campaign in India on my website, Wool Staple: http://www.woolstaple.com/2015/04/17/the-woolmark-company-and-raymond-launch-cool-wool-in-india/

They mention Raymond in the article. Raymond has been around for 8 decades. Raymond has won a number of awards that could spark an idea for further research: http://www.raymondindia.com/oc_achvmt.asp#.VTZr2ddGiSo

Here are 2 articles that I think might spark some ideas:

The Indian Fashion Industry and Traditional Indian Crafts. Khaire, MuktiView Profile. Business History Review 85.2 (Summer 2011): 345-366. DOI: 10.1017/S0007680511000419. The article’s focus was on the 1980’s but they have a wealth of information and references that can be used in relation to the 1970’s. Be sure to check out pages 359-360.

Colaiacomo, P., & Caratozzolo, V. C. (2010). The Impact of Traditional Indian Clothing on Italian Fashion Design from Germana Marucelli to Gianni Versace. Fashion Theory: The Journal of Dress, Body & Culture, 14(2), 183-213. doi:10.2752/175174110X12665093381586. This article explores the complex relationship between traditional Indian clothing and Italian fashion design, from the mid-1950s to the 1990s. I think this will be a huge hit.

Excuse the variances of the citation format, I am just cutting and pasting. Also excuse my log-in name, it’s from a past class exercise and auto logs me into the system.

  3. Did youo find this one already?

Colaiacomo, Paola, and Vittoria C. Caratozzolo. “The Impact Of Traditional Indian Clothing On Italian Fashion Design From Germana Marucelli To Gianni Versace.” Fashion Theory: The Journal Of Dress, Body & Culture 14.2 (2010): 183-213. Textile Technology Complete. Web. 21 Apr. 2015.

My terms were including hippie clothing and fashion or pop culture.

  4. Hi Sherri– Perhaps articles on the Beatles influence on fashion? The Berg Fashion Library has a nice article on the Nehru jacket and notes that the jacket, along with paisley prints, bead necklaces and kolhapari sandals were all popularized with the Beatles trip to India in 1966.
