The FTC SIG Fashion Styles List was created in response to a faculty request for a list of the various styles within fashion. The list continues to grow with regular suggestions provided by the international FTC SIG community. If you are aware of additional styles not included on this list, kindly share them with us in the reply section below. Thank you! Thanks for the update – and sorry for the delay! 🙂
Also by a South African rap band named dieantwood they have a style called “zef” described as “you’re poor but you’re fancy. You’re poor but you’re sexy, you’ve got style” as put on Wikipedia for “zef style”
Don’t forget techwear!
Great – thank you!!!
Solarpunk and Lunarpunk are missing… I’ve been trying to find some fashion types for my characters, so I ended up here. Nice post!
Thanks so much!!! 🙂
Interested to see what this style is called….not Mori girl….http://atelierdesours.canalblog.com/archives/p200-10.html
This is amazing…… The best information you’ve provided here….thank you

Thank you! It’s been added!
Thank you, Olga!
Have you thought about adding or expanding to world fashions from history and around the world..
or like bollywood fashions ect..
Hi Kswiss – We’re willing to expand to any fashion styles! Thanks for all your great comments!
or historical fashion periods as well.. from different cultures.. ^.^ The eras of fashion are
Example-
eras and each era obviously had different fashion trends/styles
Medieval ~ 500 to 1500
Renaissance ~ 1500 to 1820
Tudor ~ 1500 to 1558
Baroque ~ 1689 to 1702
Rococco ~ 1730 to1760
Empire, Regency ~ 1810 to 1820
Victorian ~ 1820 to 1901
Edwardian ~ 1901 to 1918
Vintage ~1918 to 1960’s
Modern ~ 1970 to 2000’s
This is an interesting link…
http://www.enkivillage.com/types-of-fashion-styles.html
The following youtube video goes over a few different types of lolita..
There are some streets styles that I can’t remember right now..
There are decades styles.. like flapper (20s) .. hairband/rockerstyle..this is probably grunge from 80s.. possibly more but mind blanking..
http://www.fashion-era.com/fashion_eras.htm
http://vintagefashionguild.org/fashion-timeline/
uncommon styles are fetish style (this is like lingerie and bondage wear..some people in this scene wears goth.. but has more of rope and belts added into it too)
The fashion timeline is particularly useful. Thanks!
Hey how about Scandinavian minimalist style
Thank you for this wonderful list. Not only does it help me with fashion characteristics that I like to draw, it also will help me with my own style that I’ll be able to develop when I’m older.
Also, I’m not sure if this is helpful but I found another list of quite a lot of Japanese styles.
This is a great list, Katie! Thank you!
what is the link to the japanese styles?
Great list! (http://glitter-puffs.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/all-japanese-fashion-styles.html?m=1) Thank you, Katie!
Is there a Celtic fashion?
https://www.authenticireland.com/ireland-clothing/
http://www.wikihow.com/Dress-Celtic
I am guessing it is called celtic fashion.. probably mix of new and old fashions or try for the fashion of past celtics.. I am unsure might need to research more
Sure! Good addition!
There’s also a fashion called Nu Goth
looking it up pretty interesting..
http://www.theeverydaygoth.com/2011/12/whats-all-this-fuss-about-nu-goths_10.html
http://nugoth.com/
lounge?
chic, exotic, flamboyant, sophisticated, arty?
http://www.enkicharity.com/types-of-fashion-styles.html
flamenco?
What about cleopetra look?
Im sorry i meant edgy
Cult party kei
Fairy kei
Otome kei
Gyaru
Also, may I ask what the name of the recent style is where girls wear holographic prints, rainbow colored tattoo chokers, fuzzy articles of clothing, pizza/doughnut/(insert something weird) prints, platforms, and such. They also tend to have pastel colored hair?? This is sort of a weird question but I’d love to know.
I guess that’s called hipster
Add goth please!
Thanks for the suggestion, but Goth is on the list (Gothic / Goth.) Let me know if you see anything else missing! 🙂
Sandra
Just discovered Afro Punk: http://www.afropunk.com/profiles/blog/list?user=02qth2e9gn6pk
Nice! I’ll add it to our styles list. Thanks, Carla-Mae! 🙂
I finally added this one in. Thanks! 🙂
Sandra
im so happy that there is a list of all different clothing styles it really helped alot^-^
ps, there is a little typing mistake in the list. there is a word were it’s written dasawaka but it should be dasakawa:3
Thank you very much, Kimmie! It’s nice to hear that this list is helpful to so many people around the world. And I’ll make that correction right away! 🙂
Trendy is also a fashion style though it is pretty broad the website chic fashionista talks about this style
That works! I added it in. Thanks, Ashley!
There’s a style I just recently heard about called Creepy Cute. Its somewhat like Pastel Goth, but instead of adding cuteness to something dark its vis versa.
Also there is Bubble Goth created by a singer named Kerli Koiv.
And for Lolita. Are you wanting to list all of the different types for the fashion or just keep it simple??
I also have friends who consider themselves being “Pop Punk” if you want to look into that.
If I have anymore I’ll tell you. :3
Also!! To keep up with the latest Japanese fashions this website might be able to help with it:
http://tokyofashion.com
And this might as well:
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_street_fashion
Please do! And we’re interested in all the variations, so feel free to share as many as you can. And thanks!!! 🙂
Interesting! That’s an art style, too. See Amazon’s website for the book “Cute & Creepy” (December 9, 2011), by Carrie Ann Baade (Author), Nancy E. Hightower (Author). In any case, I added it on the list. Thanks! 🙂
some more are:
Nymphet fashion
Kodona/Ouji/Boystyle
Aristocrat
I had to look up Ouji: http://hellolace.net/styles/ouji These are great, thanks. Sometimes I wonder if we need a separate list just for the styles from Japan, but I’m not sure if the group would find that helpful. (Comments appreciated!)
Normcore is not on the list. http://nymag.com/thecut/2014/02/normcore-fashion-trend.html?_ga=1.214092631.1949310685.1398261941
Definitely think normcore is something getting increasingly popular. It’s sort of anti-fashion-style though, isn’t it…
One more style is power dressing.
Added in! Thanks! 🙂
What about something like “Business” or “Business Casual” for both men and women? Are these considered styles?
Hi Bert! They are definitely styles, but not exactly style tribes to which one might belong. Just as “formal” or “casual” wouldn’t be a specific style. When I think about “style tribes,” I sort of associate them with the cliques in high school: the Goths, the preppies, the geeks…. Each group has a distinctive style, a fixed way of dressing, that they adhere to regardless of the occasion. Of course, we do have “classic” on our list, but I see that as a fixed way of dressing, as well. (Think Ines de la Fressange…) Well, that’s my 2 cents! I appreciate your comment – you made me think! If anyone has dissenting opinions, please do share! 🙂
I looked at your message again and suddenly remembered all those ’80s power dressers — women wearing suits with sharp shoulder pads and floppy ties… I think you’re right — it is a style. Thanks for the suggestion! I added these in. 🙂
furry..
Ghetto (fabulous)/ hip hop
Thought this was interesting and was looking for stuff regarding styles..came across http://www.noubikko.com/noubikko-body/tips/categories/categories.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goth_subculture
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_fashion
Emo.. Pretty sure goth has few different types of goths.
I am unsure if girly girl is considered one.
psychedelic fashion
would cosplay be considered a fashion?
Do plan on making links off the list names to what they are in brief description..?
Sorry If I typed something that was up there already.. But, I am exhausted and brain is missing things
🙂 Not a problem at all! Please do continue sending suggestions; you found several styles that we didn’t have yet. I really appreciate you reaching out and am glad our community is working to build this resource!
One more called preppy.
Got it! Thank you! 🙂
Do you know a style thats a bit like kawaii but not that cute? A mix between cute and romantic..
I know just a bit about Japanese street style, but it’s a start. The defining factor of “kawaii” style is “cuteness,” but there’s lots of variety within kawaii – decora and kawaii dolly kei, for example. You might try other styles. If you want something more romantic but still child-like, and you like folkloric or fairytale elements, you could consider Dolly Kei. If you like historic references, you could consider Elegant Gothic Lolita which incorporates Edwardian or Victorian style. You can find lots of inspiration in the book “Japanese Street Style” by Pat Lyttle, and endless inspiration online: http://tokyofashion.com/photos/ , http://japanlover.me/kawaii/directory/.
how about hilary banks style from the show fresh prince of bel air
A fast-moving visual reference for many of these styles is in this video:

Love it! Thanks for posting, Lindsay!
What do you call a fashion style using men’s formal wear with gold neckpieces, large golden necklaces?
Would you please upload or link to an image? Thanks!

Interesting… I’m not sure. Let me try posting it on the main blog page and see if any of our FIDM, FIT, Pratt, or New School librarians can show it to their student workers. Thanks!
Another fashion style is posh.
Edgy
Pastel Goth
Visual Kei
Hi Michela, You’ve stumped me with this one. Can you describe this style and tell me something about its background? Thanks!
